God Saves Prostitutes
It’s a remarkable fact that when God saved Jericho, He spared only one family, not the priest’s or the ruler’s or the great religious leaders of that time but the city whore’s. Did you hear that? Out of all the city He chose to save a whore, a prostitute!
By faith, the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. Hebrews 11 vs 31
All the rest; men, women, babies, nannies, paw paws and livestock perished : slaughtered under the Old Covenant. God tells us He saved a prostitute and her relatives because SHE HAD FAITH IN HIM. That puts a boast in my heart, that destroys the devil’s power, overcomes religious barriers, and shatters every fear sinners have of God’s judgment. He saves repentant adulterers, idolaters, fornicators, liars and whores.
But isn't it interesting that many noble, great women are mentioned in the bible without being named? What was the name of Noah’s wife for example? She must’ve been a terrific woman. Remember it had never ever rained a single drop on earth when her husband dropped the ‘bombshell’. Listen wife, God told me I need to build a large boat for the family to live in because the heavens are going to pour down and He’s about to judge the world by flooding it. Lesser women would have laughed and ridiculed him. After all he was almost 600 years old, not a young man. But not Noah’s wife. I can imagine her response, yes, dear if that is what God is telling you to do then you must do it, I’ll help you get started and work beside you. I think she was that kind of woman. God uses couples like Noah and his wife. The world called him nutty but Noah believed God and heeded His voice. His obedience saved not only his family, but his descendants too and that includes you. I‘m sure Noah’s wife loved, supported, and encouraged her husband in the Lord. BUT God doesn't tell us her name.
And what about Peter’s wife? We know he was married because he had a mother in law. Matthew 8:14 She was married to one of Jesus’ disciples. Gone all the time, on the road following Jesus. We wonder, did she pack up the kids and follow him around the country or did she stay home and keep the home fires burning, waiting on her man. I’m sure her heart swelled when Peter came home and told her Jesus had told him he was no longer a pebble (Petros) but in fact called him a boulder (Petra). And then I wonder how she felt when her beloved husband denied the Lord. Was she by his side and did she deny the Savior too? I’m sure she was important to Peter’s ministry and thus important to the Master but yet we don’t know her name.
And we have Lot's wife, the woman with the issue of blood, the woman at the well and let's not forget that sweet little old lady who gave all she had.....many noteworthy women whose names we don't know. Yet....
A whore following a life of seamless sin, is not only honored by being named in the bible, but is chosen in the great faith chapter of Hebrews as an example for us to look up to. Wow! What an amazing God we serve! God wants you to honor Rahab and follow her example. Isn't that so Him? So much love, such mercy! God even chose to put her in the lineage of Jesus! Now how awesome is that!
He pulled her out of the whore houses of Jericho, saved her from certain violent death, and from hell itself. She lived out her days in dignity among God’s people in the Promised Land. Rahab is in glory now. Hallelujah! God saved the whore of Jericho because of her FAITH.
Don’t you dare look down on my sister! Abba is proud of her: God saves prostitutes!
In His love,
Elizabeth
